How I find time to workout and stay healthy with a crazy schedule

For the past two years I’ve been taking at least two classes every semester in the evenings (including the winter and summer semesters) so I can complete my pre-requisites for physical therapy school. This hectic schedule means that pretty much every minute of my day is planned…including workouts! I’m really fortunate to have access to a fitness center at work so I can get a workout in at lunch time…but I know some people aren’t as fortunate.

I started writing all of the things I need to do in a planner, and that includes all school and social related stuff. Since I know I’ll more than likely have time to workout at lunch I’ve stopped putting that in my planner, but if your workout times are not consistent I would recommend ‘scheduling’ workouts.

Wow this weekend is busy :)

Wow this weekend is busy 🙂

I would also pick a workout time that you know you can stick to. I used to workout after work, but on most days I really had to push myself to go to the gym. I would literally pass it on the way home so I really had no excuse. This worked for me before I started school…but it definitely wouldn’t work for me now (especially since we moved and I no longer belong to that gym).

In terms of eating healthy, I try to plan my lunches and dinners for the week on Sunday. Sometimes that happens (lunches usually do) but sometimes it doesn’t. I try to take a salad for lunch every day, and change up the protein so I don’t get bored. I also make sure to bring healthy snacks like fruit and veges so I can avoid going to the vending machine for candy.

Meal planning...because eating ice cream for dinner really isnt healthy.

I am definitely not perfect with this! I will be the first to admit that I will eat my weight in Reese’s and candy corn during this halloween season..but I try not to do that every day. I usually have dessert everyday…but I try to make it something small. I feel that anything in moderation is healthy and as long you don’t overdo it too often, having a cookie or a piece of chocolate (or two) is fine!

I'm sorry...this cracked me up!

Just remember to do what works for you. Sometimes the hardest part of working out is the act of getting out the door to the gym or to start your run…but always remember the feeling you get after you finish your workout (I know there are more endorphin junkies out there!)

One busy weekend…

Me and the nugget!

The weekend started with a 1st birthday party for one of the kids of a couple at my church.  Although the baby I’m holding in the picture above was not the one whose birthday it was.  Her name is Ellie…and she is one of my favorite little nuggets ever!

This picture was after everyone was taking pictures of Ellie and her Mom, Megan.  Megan and I went to college together, and she was actually the one who set Andrew and I up (thanks, Megan…lol).

Ellie is saying ‘No pictures, please!’

I’m sure Megan will love me for the next picture.  Why she has put up with me for over 10 years I will never understand 😉 20131027-215228.jpg

On Sunday, Andrew and I went to church, but before church we went to Dunkin’ Donuts.  I’m a pumpkin freak, so I got the two donut combo with a double chocolate and pumpkin donuts (and yes I ate them both).   The person working at DD accidentally gave me an extra donut, so I shared it with Luke (Megan’s husband).  Yes…I do share.

Pumpkin donut + DD Coffee = Happiness

And after church we went to Panera and then did grocery shopping.

Lots of veges!

Lots of veges!

The rest of my weekend should have looked like this:

Chemistry = Boring!

But instead I’m one episode away from finishing Parenthood on Netflix.

Netflix humor

Please tell me I’m not the only one who does this?!

Did you do anything fun this weekend?

Can you really just watch one episode of something on Netflix?! I can’t…they even start the next episode for you…it’s so easy to get sucked in!

Mini arm workout…and some mom and me time

That picture shows my view for most of my workouts so far this week.  It’s kind nice biking since I can read Runner’s World, but I still miss running! I also did this arm workout I found on Pinterest.  I wish I would have had time to complete the cycle more than once, but alas that is all I had time for after the 45 minutes of cardio.  I think I will use heavier weights for the bicep curls next time too (I only used 5 lbs…but if you saw my arms you would understand…it’s like I don’t have biceps!).Arms workout

After work I’ll usually just head home, but since Andrew has class right after work on Wednesdays I’m on my own for dinner.  I needed to get a birthday present for one of our friend’s daughter’s first birthday, so I called my  Mom and asked if she wanted to meet for dinner and then do a little shopping.  My Mom is one of my favorite shopping buddies, so I’m really glad that she agreed.  We went to a local place to get a crab cake (Mom) and cream of crab soup in a bread bowl (me).

Cream of crab soup in a bread bowl…one of my favorite meals!!!

Mom's crab cake..also yummy!

Can you see a theme here?! We do live in Baltimore, Hon!

The crabcakes are awesome...the football is poop (GO STEELERS!)

Our shopping trip was a success, so now all I need is a card and we will be good to go for this weekend!

Did you do anything fun today?

Do you have any good arm (or leg) workouts? I’m trying to incorporate more strength training into my workout schedule.

Random question of the day: Favorite soup? Cream of Crab!!! (but Panera’s broccoli cheddar comes in second)

Sunday Funday

Saturday Workout: 45 min. bike, 200ish situps

Sunday: rest day

Saturday was spent getting more shopping done, but this time at Costco (one of my favoritest places in the whole wide world!). We went around 3:00pm for what Andrew calls ‘lupper’ (a combo of lunch and supper) since we woke up later and really counted breakfast as lunch.

I got the turkey sandwich, and Andrew got a piece of pizza and a hot dog (which was a bit much in my opinion…). I was also super excited that they switched from Coke to Pepsi products since Diet Pepsi is a million times better than Diet Coke!

After stuffing our faces, we did some shopping. Some things were essentials…like granola and cereal…but there were other random purchases…like Christmas cards (yes folks…the Nagels try to get the cards out right after thanksgiving). Overall I would consider it a good trip!

On Sunday it was go go go. We went to church in the morning, then went straight to my cousin’s 3rd birthday party. Then we went home for a few hours before heading to Bible study.

Happy 3rd Birthday, little man!

Oh yeah…and I got to watch the Steelers win against the Ravens. GOOOOO STEELERS!!!! Black and Yellow 🙂

How was your weekend?

Diet Coke or Diet Pepsi? Diet Pepsi rulezzzzz (with a z)

Any other Steelers fans out there?!

The start to a three day weekday = Long run!

Hey Y’all! I hope you’re all having a great start to the weekend! I work for the government, and despite it being shut down for a few weeks, I got Friday off since it was my Alternate Work Schedule (or AWS) day off.  I took the opportunity to get my ‘long run’ in on Friday morning, which was nice.  ‘Long run’ is in quotes because it was only 7 miles…but I’m hoping those same 7 miles won’t hurt as bad next weekend.  For whatever reason, they were crazy hard today!  I was still able to finish in under a hour…but barely!

Running Funny

At least that’s how I felt at mile 6 of 7 today…

After the run I tried to be productive and get some laundry done (i.e. fold the laundry that has been sitting in the dryer for the past 4 days), and also watched some ‘Baby Daddy’ on Netflix.  Has anyone seen that show? It’s on ABC Family and it’s really cute, mindless TV.

Then Andrew and I were more productive by getting grocery shopping done so we didn’t have to do it later this weekend.  We even made up a list of meals we’re making for the week…which never really happens…lol.

But in order to be productive, Chick-fil-a had to be involved!

sauces Nuggets

When Andrew eats Chick-fil-a, he has to have a variety of sauces, while I’m a simple BBQ kind of girl.  So the Chick-fil-a was enough fuel for us to get our grocery shopping done, except for a Costco trip tomorrow (which I am super excited about…I love love love Costco!).  We then went out to dinner with my parents (which was after our usual dinner time so no pictures were taken since I was so hungry I was about to eat my hand!), but I always love hanging out with my parents, so that was really fun 🙂

Hope you’re Fridays were nice and relaxing!

2013 Baltimore Running Festival Relay: Run For Nugget!

This was the first race I’ve completed since this time last year due to the Morton’s Neuroma (it’s a fancy name for a pinched nerve) in my left foot. Due to this injury, my butt has been stuck either biking (using an exercise bike) and/or taking Zumba classes (which I have fallen in love with and sort of want to get certified to teach).

Anywho, the team got up at crazy early hours to meet at a park and ride so we could all go in one car. Once we got downtown, we of course got a random person to take our picture.

Team Run for Nugget befor the race!

Team Run for Nugget before the race!

I ran the second leg (7.1 miles) and had to catch a bus, so I left the group and went to sit on the bus that was going to ‘promptly leave at 7:30am’ (it didn’t…).  It also took like four hours to get to the spot (Ok…I may exaggerate a little bit), but we got there in time for us to see the first runners run past, which was pretty cool.

Waiting for my turn to run = taking pictures of my fun socks

Once my teammate got there we made the exchange of stuff and the time chip, and I was off.  My run was fairly hilly (despite one of the guys on the bus telling me it was mostly downhill…not cool, dude), and I got to go through the Under Armour headquarters (if you didn’t know Under Armour was based in Maryland…shame on you!). My goal was sub 8:00/mile, and I attained that…barely (I think my average was 7:56/mile).  But for only really being able to run for a few weeks I think that’s pretty darn good 🙂

Overall, the team ran the marathon course in 3:48:27, which was an 8:43 pace.  YAY RUN FOR NUGGET!!  We did awesome 🙂

BRF Times

All of our splits…in case you were curious 🙂

Are you running any races in the next few weeks?

Do you wear compression socks when you run? If so, what brand?  (P.S. the socks we wore weren’t compression, but I’m in the market for a new pair)

Random question of the day: How do you carb up for a race?  For me, the more cookies and cake I eat, the better I run.  Oh yeah, and pasta is always good too 🙂

The (not really) New and (hopefully) Improved Endorphin Junkie Blog :)

Good morning Everyone!

Due to difficulties with the website where I had the original Endorphin Junkie blog, I switched to a different website that I can actually write posts in without having to figure out HTML (sorry…my husband is the computer junkie…I’m the endorphin junkie).  So welcome to the new site! My hope is to update it when exciting things happen (which usually aren’t on Tuesdays and Thursday because I have class on those nights…today is an exception since I’m going into work late!).

I hope you’re all having a great Thursday so far, and I’ll hopefully have a post up either today or tomorrow about the most recent race I ran this past weekend 🙂
